The Birth of a Nation Chopper started its life as a 2005 Ultra Motorcycles SDT 113CI Single Down Tube Chopper. At the skilled hands of Cranked Customs, it has become a moving memorial to the bravery of the Canadian soldiers in WWI.
The bike’s frame and tinwork basecoat paint has been closely matched to replicate the colour of a Canadian WWI uniform. It took three paint mixing and testing sessions to get this precise colour match. Scenes of the battle, images of the Vimy Memorial, and actual replica WWI medals decorate the chopper. The gas tank is emblazoned with the portraits of four soldiers who received Victoria Cross medals for their bravery at Vimy Ridge: Private William Johnstone Milne, VC; Lance Sargeant Ellis Wellwood Sifton, VC; Private John George Pattison, VC; and Captain Thain Wendell McDowell, VC, DSO.
The center piece of the back fender is a Vimy Cenotaph with dedications from the Vimy Memorial and the map of the Vimy battle lines. The rear of the chopper has an excerpt from “ In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae:
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
Master Corporal Jody Mitic Rides again.
Complete Story in May June 2007 Motorcycle Mojo Magazine on newsstand end of April. www.motorcyclemojo.com
Jody lost both his feet in January. With the help of Barrie Harley-Davidson/Buell and many other kind people and companies who donated time and money, a custom Mutant Buell was built to suit his needs.
A bit of background how we met Jody:
Hi there my name is Jody Mitic. I read your mag for
the first time in Afghanistan. We got a pile of them
for free. Thanks. It was the one with the "Hell
Yeah" and the "Hardcore Buell". I was really
interested in the bikes and was hoping to get some
info and actually called you guys from a sat phone to
get some. I left a message you may or may not
remember. Well I have had a bit of bad luck since
then and I stepped on an anti personal mine on the
11th. Now I am in Sunnybrook in TO recovering from
losing both my feet.
What I was hoping you guys could do for me is put me
in touch with the builder of those bikes and/or other
builders like that. I have been riding for awhile but
up till now all I have been riding is crotch rockets
and I have very little knowlege about the custom style
I saw in your mag. And with my new "condition" I will
need some custom work I am sure...LOL. Thumb gear
shift anyone? LOL!!
Hope to hear back from you guys soon. I would like to
see if I can even afford that kind of a machine.
Sincerly Jody Mitic
